Buried Country: Original Film Soundtrack

I recently saw this doco on NITY I think, a brilliant piece of
historical documenting and well worth seeing if you have any
interest in Australian Indigenous music.
There some amazing stuff here, but its the shear guts and
determination of the early pioneers of Murri and Koori music
that I found the most inspiring.
It was hard enough to break into the music scene in the 50's and 60's
in Australia and that was especially true for indigenous artists.
The story telling aspect of country music was for Aboriginal
people very much in tune with their culture and country music
became a new vehicle to express that.
Its a tradition that continues to this day!

Isis - Self Titled Cd

Brisbane feminist indi folk bank Isis hale from the 1990's
and are still heard on the radio weekly as part on the intro
to Megaherzz the womans feminist radio program on Sundays
that has been going for, well a long time I remember them
when I was doing the Latin American show back in the late 80's.
Well anyway the wonderful song they use is the "Masturbation Song"
which is on this album and was perhaps there best known tune

They put out this self titled disk in 1995 and followed with 2 others.
Also an Lp compilation of track from over the years.
The band called it a day in 1998 and have reformed for a few
occasions over the years.
Many thanks to Jeff for this cd!

Calexico at The Spiegeltent - Brisbane Festival - Brisbane 17-09-13

Well I don't often do this but its a special occasion
and I don't mean the Calexico concert which indeed
was special, but the first gig for my brand new camera,

I have a last gone SLR and I'm very happy with the results.
It will take a lot of getting used to but I will get the hang of it.

So the gig, well I'm a long time Calexico fan and I missed them
last time they played here so I was determined not to this time
They were superb, it was quite a treat to see these most accomplished
musicians in such a small intimate venue as the Spiegeltent is.
They played through an excellent set list you can see here
and were joined on stage during the encore with Bernard Fanning
and he sang a song with Calexico backing him.
These guys are one of the worlds great bands if you ever get the
chance to see them don't miss it.
I also had the pleasure of meeting long term blog contributor
Michael Palmer at the gig so an excellent night all round!

The Fridge Magnets - Self Titled EP

Heres a cd I got from Jeff a Brissy boy who now lives in
Canada. Its great folky stuff from a band who I know
nothing about, this ep was released in 1998 and it seems
they played at the Shamrock a bit.
So if you have any stories do leave them in the comments!
Thanks to Jeff!

Kransky Sisters Piece Of Cake - Brisbane, Powerhouse 16-08-2013

From Abba to Pink Floyd and Beyonce to AC/DC,
these three eccentric sisters with their eclectic mix of instruments
including musical saw, tuba, old reed keyboard, and kitchen pots,
have cooked up a very special sweet and sour serving of well known
songs gleaned from their old wireless at home.
Add to this, a spicy lot of stories from the sisters’ travels,
and you have the icing on the cake. Hot out of the oven,
these oddball Queensland sisters reminiscent of your old aunties,
will leave you wanting seconds!

Yes Queensland's funnest musical export are back with a brand new
show weaving their hilarious stories with their amazing covers
of songs that we mostly all have heard.
Mine you I had no idea of what the song "all the pretty ladies"
was, I was beginning to think it was one of their own.
A quick internet search and I discovered the world of Bouncy!
Well that was educational!

There was plenty of props and tons of laughs along the way.
Audience participation for the couple of fellas who got
to become honorary Kranskys!
The Kransky Sisters feature the enigmatic talents of Annie Lee,
Christine Johnston and Carolyn Johns,
as Mourne, Eve and Dawn Kransky.
If you want to hear and see the show its at the Powerhouse
till Sunday. Meantime I have posted a few videos at the
end of this post.
I missed the incredible version of Queens Bohemian Rhapsody
which was the highlight of the evening!
